The Apple iPad

Thu 28 Jan 2010

The Apple iPad has finally been announced. In addition to revolutionising the print media, the device looks to also revolutionise the netbook industry. Possibly by destroying it.

But does it live up to the hype? See below for the pros and cons of the ground-breaking new device:

PROS

There are some really great things about the iPad that show that this device has the potential to be a real game changer in the mobile world.

Small Form Factor

The iPad seems to fit the same niche that netbooks currently fill. People buy netbooks because the need something cheap and tiny to browse the internet and write the occasional email.

This is all possible with the iPad (with Apple restrictions of course see below) which has arrived with a netbook price point and flexible 3g capability included.

Those sitting on the fence, pondering whether they really need a physical keyboard for their interactions will snap the iPad up.

Great eBook Integration

From what I can tell, print media (the artist formerly known as) will feature heavily in the iPad's media line-up. Reading online newspapers, magazines and books looks like it could be quite ...

State of the Art 03

Thu 12 Nov 2009

It's my own stupid fault for not updating for over 2 weeks but it seems that the entire world has changed yet again. Ok, maybe not the entire world but my little tech focused section of it definitely has.

Let's get cracking shall we?

A ray of light illuminates the dark fortress

Yes, you read that correctly. Apple has added a way for developers to track the progress of their apps during the approval process. It's a small change that should help to reduce the number of App-Store-limbo induced stomach ulcers affecting many of us developers out there.

Now, why have Apple done this? Competitive pressure from the new kid on the block (Android)? Or do they actually care about us developers in some way? It's a shame that I don't know the answer to that question.

Google's turn-by-turn navigation backported to the G1

I'm in the process of writing a post about Verizon's new Droid (It is old news already I know) so I won't go into detail here about how much of a potential game changer it is.However, one much touted Droid exclusive is the inclusion ...

Save your spine with Posture Coach!

Sun 25 Oct 2009

We all wish we had better posture but if you are anything like me you probably have found that it is actually quite hard to maintain good posture for an extended period of time without eventually become cramped and slouched over. Regular stretching and walking around can help but remembering to do this when deep in the zone can be troublesome.

By not taking steps to improve their posture today, millions of people are opening themselves up to years of back pain and problems caused by repeated spinal misalignment and lower back pressure.

Posture Coach, Boosted Human's latest Health & Fitness iPhone app, was born out of a direct need to maintain our own posture during the long hours we spend at a desk each day. The app is very simple to use (as all good things are) and has 2 different modes of operation to suit any situation.

Posture Coach

Mode 1 is a reminder with a variable interval. To use, you simply set how frequently you would like to be reminded and then tap the Start button to begin. The app will play a tone and/vibrate after each interval has elapsed to indicate that you should re-check your posture ...

In this episode:

The End of Privacy: Episode #12

Researchers have developed a way to effectively see through walls using interference from approximately 34 Zigbee mesh network transmitters. Zigbee is a commonly used mesh protocol that allows for low powered distributed communications (I have an XBee mesh module on one of my robots).

By distributing the nodes around an area and then monitoring the interference generated by movement the researchers were able to basically see into a room from outside (movement at least). Hmm... I must try this one day :) [via Technology Review]

Paid apps available on Palm Pre tomorrow?

Apparently paid apps is coming to the Palm Pre tomorrow for those in the US. Canadians will have to wait a bit longer unfortunately and, extrapolating from my Android experience, Australians may never actually get them. [via Engadget]

Ride The Wave, Maaaan

Lifehacker has a screenshot tour of the new Google Wave service. Are you one of the lucky elite that managed to score an invite? Is Google Wave really the game-changer it was hyped to be or just a ripple on the landscape of social communication? Let us know in the comments! [via Lifehacker]

Use API, Make Money - BandsInTown's new API not only allows you to easily find event information for over 200,000 events in the BIT database. It also allows developers to directly make revenue through ticket sales via the API. Pretty nifty if you ask me. I might develop an app for it to supplement the 59c I made today through AdWords. ;) - via ProgrammableWeb
